There is so much confusion over what exactly a "home based business" means. As I discussed briefly in the top myths section having a home based business does not mean that you will be always be able to work from home everyday. Nowadays there are endless arrangements for self employed individuals hoping to be based out of their home.
Some of the more common arrangements are:
Home-based business:
- a business that is administered from home. This does not mean that all of the work for the business is done at home - on the contrary - the owner could run a business that requires travel (eg. international consulting) or working locally but on site (eg. construction contractor) or working at the client's office (eg. computer network installer) or working at home (eg. website designer).
Telecommuting:
- people who telecommute may be self employed or may be employees. They are workers that log onto client/employees systems during normal work hours and perform that day's work from home. Most employer/clients require the worker to be logged onto the work system and available by e-mail or phone throughout their work week. Telecommuters often have "check-in" visits periodically where they work out of the business office for a day or more and have meetings with the client/employer. The work done by these individuals can be anything that can be done with a phone, fax and/or internet connection.
Work-at-home business:
- self employed individuals who work exclusively from home. These people provide online and/or telephonic services OR sell products from their home. These businesses may require site or client visits occasionally but this is the exception rather than the rule. These products or services can be anything that can be done from home.
Home party business:
- home party businesses are businesses where the owner travels from home to home putting on sales parties for the homeowners and their friends and family - we discuss these businesses and provide some examples on our
kit businesses
page.
Home service business:
- home service businesses are businesses where the purveyor provides services to others at the client's house. From home improvement to tutoring to home health care there are tons of ways to provide services to client's in their home. These businesses are often administered from the business owners house.
Many home workers have found it to be valuable to create businesses that are a mixture of two or more of the above. Whatever form of home based business you choose - you will probably need a website - I know I have mentioned it elsewhere on this site - but I am just so darn excited about it!! I have been using the
Site Build It! from sitesell
suite of tools and training in order to build this website. As I mentioned previously this website bypassed the traffic of my previous site within a month (the other site, despite advertising, had fewer hits in a year than the new one had in the first month - while it was still under construction!!).
