Description of Business:
Since 1969, NHS Human Services has been dedicated to providing services to individuals with special needs. The NHS has sixteen specialized foster care/adoption programs for which they recruit foster parents. When a foster parent/family is selected, they receive training in the specific needs of the child they are matched with and receive support and training from NHS on an ongoing basis. Some families are also trained to participate in multi-dimensional treatment for youngsters in crisis. Working with NHS therapists, medical-care providers and other clinical treatment staff, individuals enter into the challenge of being a foster parent to a special needs youngster with all of the knowledge and support necessary to be successful.

Pros:
1. Foster parenting can be extremely rewarding.

2. Foster parents have an opportunity to change lives in a positive way.

3. The specialized training received can be used to explore other income sources.

Cons:
1. Foster parents do not receive a salary but rather a stipend to assist in the cost of caring for the child.

2. You must be flexible and able to work in highly emotional and stressful settings.

3. Some states require licensure, background checks and certifications which must be renewed regularly at your own expense.
